Anadolu Efes publishes its 2013 Sustainability Report

Anadolu Efes operations save enough energy to meet the annual energy need of 200.000 households

Anadolu Efes has published its 2013 Sustainability Report covering the company’s commitment to its sustainability, performance, and future goals. With its sustainability projects carried out under the motto “To Sustain a Better Life!” Anadolu Efes is working to mitigate the effects of climate change, which creates significant environmental and social consequences as well as economic risks for the brewing sector.

2013 Sustainability Report, the 4th report issued by the company, has received the Platinum Award in ‘Sustainability Report Category’ of 2014 Spotlight Awards Global Communications Competition organised by League of American Communications Professionals (LACP).



Anadolu Efes has published its 2013 Sustainability Report, which presents the company’s aims and achievements in the area of sustainability and corporate responsibility during the year 2013, covering Anadolu Efes operations in Turkey, Russia, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.

Deputy CEO of Beverage Group Hüseyin Akın: “We work for sustaining a better life.”


As a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and the UNGC CEO Water Mandate initiative, Deputy CEO of Beverage Group Hüseyin Akın made the following assessment about the report:


“We operate for sustaining a better life in a highly dynamic and economically developing geography with a population of more than 300 million. For 45 years, we have been working to meet the objectives of generating value for our stakeholders and developing in a sustainable way that preserves the continuity of our business. We continue to improve our work in-line with Anadolu Efes Positive Impact Plan which we built with “To Sustain a Better Life” motto. By seizing all kinds of social, economic, and environmental opportunities and handling the associated risks, we continued to improve our sustainability performance in 2013. For example, compared to 2008, we consumed 10% less energy and generated 10% fewer emissions per unit product in our breweries.Between 2008-2013, the amount of energy we saved is equal to the yearly consumption of 200.000 households.”

Between 2008-2013 the amount of water Anadolu Efes saved is equal to the annual consumption of 67.000 households.


Anadolu Efes 2013 Sustainability Report covers recent developments on water management, energy and emissions management, enhancing the value chain, product responsibility, operational reliability, community development, talent management, and packaging management. Highlights of the report include:

• Compared to 2008, Anadolu Efes consumed 19 percent less water during beer production and 24 percent less water during malt production. Between 2008-2013, water saving of the company meets the annual water need of 67.000 households.*
• Compared to 2008, the company generated 24% less waste water in beer and malt production.
• Compared to 2008, Anadolu Efes consumed 10% less energy and generated 10% fewer emissions per unit product in its breweries.
• Energy saving between 2008-2013, meets the annual energy need of 200,000 households. **
• Within the same period the amount of greenhouse gas emissions reduction achieved is equivalent to planting 138,490 trees.***
• Between 2008-2013, preference of returnable bottles resulted in saving enough glass bottles to create a line stretching 178 times longer than the Great Wall of China.****
• Thus, through the savings gained by reuse of glass bottles between 2008-2013, approximately 900.000 trees’ lifelong greenhouse gas emissions is eliminated.
• In 2013, 94.6% of solid waste and by-products in beer and malt production is recycled.
• Through enhancing the value chain, Anadolu Efes continued improving its business development practices regarding suppliers, dealers, and distributors. Following its successful introduction in Turkey, Anadolu Efes Agricultural Support Program was put into place in the company’s Moldova operation as well, thereby presenting the national economy with a new area of production.
• Support for local activities in the fields of local supply, environment, health, culture, art, and education continued with various projects and sponsorships. In 2013, local procurement rate calculated by expenditure is increased to 78%.
• In 2013, within the scope of equal opportunity, the rate of blue-collar female employees increased to 12% and the rate of white-collar female employees increased to 36.4%.

Anadolu Efes 2013 Sustainability Report received Platinum Award


2013 Sustainability Report, has received the Platinum Award in ‘Sustainability Report Category’ of 2014 Spotlight Awards Global Communications Competition organized by League of American Communications Professionals (LACP). Besides, the report received Gold Award in the Most Improved Applications category of the competition.
